Walden Seating

WALDEN SEATING, 2021—2023

Walden's primary focus has been seating for meditation. After the bench we knew we wanted to create something that support other sitting postures. The meditation bench is designed for the seiza meditation posture. Seiza has been Japan’s traditional way of sitting since ancient times, and buddhist monks adopted it to show respect to the Buddha during meditation, which is how it became linked to the practice. Walden's bench supports this posture with a 15 degree tilt to push your hips forward while sitting, this erects your spine in a comfortable way. It is made in a range of solid hardwoods and comes with a large cushion underneath to support your knees and ankles for long periods of sitting.

MEDITATION CUSHIONS

Alongside the Original Meditation Cushion, we developed a range of other cushions using different upholstery techniques and materials. The goal was to offer a variety of price points while giving customers options that fit into their homes. These fabrics included bouclé, canvas, sashiko, and technical synthetics.

THE LYING MAT

The Lying Mat was designed with nontraditional meditation practices in mind. Originally created for sound bath studios and those who preferred lying-down meditations, it also found a home with a more unexpected audience: people seeking comfort and grounding during psychedelic journeys. The name was a nod to both the posture and the altered states it was made to support.
