City on Wheels

CITY ON WHEELS, 2023

Cities face mounting pressure from growing populations and strained transportation networks.

Developed with Lukas Kauer and Fragile, City of Wheels reimagines urban mobility through trams to explore a smarter alternative.

We considered trams because they’re efficient, high-capacity, cost effective, and help reinforce local communities.

MULTI-PURPOSE

Building on these qualities, we enhanced the tram’s potential with a flexible system. Modular pods built on a structural frame can be easily configured for passengers or cargo, with each pod flexibly supporting both seating and organization.

The interchangeable chassis, designed for quick swaps, supports rapid repairs and varied uses, extending the tram’s functionality.

SYSTEM OF PARTS

We saw the tram as a node in a network of peripherals:

Lockers placed along high traffic routes can enable efficient delivery and pickup of goods,

along with a key fob for regular users to unlock storage, vending, and other nodes offered along the route.

SYSTEM UPDATE

Sometimes, the smartest, most scalable solutions come from taking a second look at the wheels we already have. Many cities have a deep historical connection to trams, and reviving them in an evolved, adaptable form preserves a sense of place while modernizing movement.
